Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap plans. These plans are offered by private insurance companies authorized by Medicare, and are meant to cover the gaps that exist in Medicare. They offer more flexibility as to which doctors you can see without referrals, more options as to where you can seek medical care, with a predictable monthly cost. You can avoid the potential fluctuations and uncertainty from month to month, and year to year out of pocket expenses.
Medicare Advantage Plans. These plans are also referred to as Part C of Medicare, with many also including prescription drug coverage. They are offered by many different major private health insurance companies. In order to sign up you must have your Medicare Part A and Part B in effect. Additional benefits may include dental, vision and hearing which vary from plan to plan, from company to company and area such as county of residence.
Prescription Drug Plans. These plans which cover prescription medications are stand-alone plans typically used in conjunction with Medicare Supplement plans, or original Medicare, neither of which include prescription drug coverage.
